Quick answer — what is driver fatigue management and why does it matter?

Driver fatigue management is the set of scheduling rules, rest enforcement, and real-time monitoring that stops a tired truck driver from drifting out of his lane. I was riding shotgun with Sabit Ali on a Mumbai to Delhi run, somewhere past Kota at 2:47 AM. He had been driving for almost 14 hours straight. We had stopped twice for chai and once for diesel. No proper rest, no real sleep. His eyes were red, his blinks were getting longer, and he kept rubbing his face every few minutes. That is the moment I understood why driver fatigue is the silent cause of truck accidents in this country. It does not announce itself. There is no dashboard light. By the time you notice it, the truck has already drifted half a metre out of the lane.

We talk about speeding. We talk about drunk driving. We talk about pothole roads. But fatigue is the killer nobody puts on the cause sheet, because dead drivers cannot be interviewed and survivors blame the other vehicle. Why fatigue is the most under-reported risk in Indian trucking

MoRTH itself flags overspeeding as the top killer, around 68 percent of road accident deaths in 2023. Overspeeding is real. But ask any honest fleet operator and they will tell you, the reason a driver is going too fast at 3 AM is because he wants to be home by morning. The reason he misjudged the curve is because he has not slept in 18 hours. Speed is the symptom. Fatigue is the disease.

Long-haul trucking in India does not have a legally enforced rest cycle that anyone actually follows. The driver gets paid per trip. The transporter gets paid on delivery. The shipper wants the truck moving. Nobody, on paper, wants the driver to stop. The dhaba and the prayer mat are the only enforcement mechanisms, and both are voluntary.

When we started looking at our own JFK Transporters fleet, 130 trucks across 8 branches, we found the same pattern. Most of our serious near-miss events were not happening on bad roads. They were happening on the cleanest stretches of expressway, between 1 AM and 5 AM, when the driver had been at the wheel for over 10 hours.

What fatigue actually looks like on the road

Fatigue is not just falling asleep at the wheel. That is the very last stage. Before that, there is microsleep, where the brain checks out for 2 to 8 seconds while the eyes are still open. At 80 kmph, 5 seconds of microsleep is 110 metres of road covered without a conscious decision. That is the length of a cricket ground. That is the distance between a safe overtake and a head-on collision.

Inside the cabin, fatigue shows up as longer blinks, drifting in the lane, late braking, missing the lane line on a turn, and slow reaction to brake lights ahead. By the tenth hour, the truck is already wandering before the driver realises.

Why the fleet operator usually finds out too late

Here is the part that frustrates me as a transporter. With GPS alone, you find out about fatigue after the truck has crashed. The geofence pings, the location updates, the speed history, none of that tells you the driver is about to fall asleep. GPS is forensic. It tells you what happened after it happened. Map the actual hours your drivers are at the wheel, not the planned hours. Most plans assume a 4 hour break that never happens. Get the real data. Then put a hard rule on consecutive driving hours and enforce it through tech, not through WhatsApp.
